Safe Operation and Maintenance Essentials of Telehandlers
Safe operation is the top priority in telehandler use, as the two most prominent hazards during operation are overturning and pedestrian collisions. The key to preventing overturning lies in mastering the load-bearing characteristics of the telehandler: as the boom extends or the lifting height increases, the allowable load capacity decreases significantly. For instance, a telehandler capable of lifting 2 tons with the boom fully retracted may only lift about 160 kg when the boom is fully extended. Therefore, operators must check the load chart inside the cab before operation, which displays the allowable load corresponding to different boom angles and lengths, and must not exceed the limit load. Additionally, driving with a raised load should be avoided at all times, as this will drastically reduce the vehicle's stability.
Visibility management is another critical aspect of safe operation. When the boom is raised or large loads are carried, the telehandler will have significant blind spots, especially on the front right side and the rear. To address this, modern telehandlers are equipped with visibility aids such as rearview cameras and proximity sensors. Operators must ensure these aids are in good working order before use. On construction sites, pedestrian-vehicle segregation should be prioritized, with dedicated traffic routes and warning signs set up to avoid collisions. If the operator's view is obstructed during operation, they should stop immediately, seek assistance from a signaler, or get out of the cab to check the surrounding environment before proceeding.
Regular inspection and maintenance are essential to ensure the long-term safe and stable operation of telehandlers. A complete maintenance system should include daily visual checks, regular professional inspections, and scheduled maintenance in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Daily checks should cover the hydraulic system (for leaks and pressure), brake system, tire condition, and instrument functionality. Regular maintenance items include replacing engine oil, hydraulic oil, and filters, as well as inspecting the boom structure for cracks or wear. For example, the hydraulic system of the Terex telehandler requires 10-micron filtration to ensure oil cleanliness, and the fuel tank and hydraulic oil tank need to be refilled according to specified capacities to avoid affecting performance. Only through standardized maintenance can the service life of the telehandler be extended and the risk of equipment failure during operation be reduced.
